The City of Pori and Port of Pori Ltd investigate opportunities to construct an industrial-scale CO2 terminal in Pori

    Bulletin22.01.2025

Port of Pori Ltd and the City of Pori have launched a preliminary investigation on the construction of an industrial-scale carbon dioxide terminal in Pori. The CO2 terminal would serve Finnish energy and industrial companies by enabling the delivery of liquefied carbon dioxide to the Port of Pori by car, rail or ship.

The terminal would enable exporting carbon dioxide by ship for use as a raw material for hydrogen refining or long-term storage, for example. The terminal could also enable the import of biogenic carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide capture is currently minor, but it is expected to increase significantly in order to meet Finland’s and Europe’s climate targets.

Finnish district heating and electricity production as well as forest industry processes produce significant volumes of biogenic carbon dioxide, which can be captured and refined into methanol or methane by using green hydrogen, for example. In terms of carbon dioxide emissions, electric fuels produced with power-to-X technologies are equivalent to bio-based renewable fuels, such as renewable diesel and biomethane. E-fuels are vital in sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as marine and aviation and heavy road traffic.

“The CO2 terminal will act as a crucial catalyst for the construction of e-fuel and hydrogen production plants in Pori. This is also supported by the region’s strong energy infrastructure and the renewable energy production capacities that are currently under construction and in the planning phase, ensuring Pori’s position as a pioneer in the clean transition,” says Lauri Inna, Mayor.

The energy service company Wega Group Oy is responsible for preparing the report.
