The base of the Pori offshore wind hub is located in the port. Thanks to its new investments, such as the RoRo ramp, Mäntyluoto is already able to serve the demo power plants of Suomen Hyötytuuli.
But as a whole, the positive impacts of the Offshore Wind Hub extend far beyond the port – to Pori, Satakunta and all of Western Finland. At its best, the Offshore Wind Hub is part of an extensive ecosystem that focuses on new forms of energy and the green transition. The economic benefits of this ecosystem affect several sectors, including industry and services.
According to calculations by the Danish non-profit CIP Foundation, which focuses on green transition projects, the installation of offshore wind turbines alone will bring a total of 565 person-years per gigawatt to the area.
Approximately one-third of the jobs are actual installation work, while the rest relates to machines and services required for the installation work and more general services, such as accommodation and restaurant services.
This ecosystem, built around the assembly and maintenance of the offshore wind turbines, is therefore significant, but when taking into account new industrial investments that utilise the emission-free energy produced by the offshore wind turbines, the economic impacts become even greater.
The Offshore Wind Hub itself is a unique opportunity to build a completely new industrial operation, but it also has potential to become even larger. Building future-proof energy ecosystems of this kind can elevate the entire region to a completely new level of success.
